Customers can now order ports via the ECX Portal, as well as in UECP. For a guide on how to order an ECX Port online, please follow the below guide.
You can easily navigate to the online port ordering with our new Global Navigation Header by clicking on Ports, and the drop down “Order an ECX Port”.
The first selection customers can select is how they want to connect via:
If you have your own equipment in an Equinix datacenter, select “My cage in the Equinix IBX”
If you are you using a Building Meet Me Room, a neutral cage, to connect to others, select “A Building Meet Me Room”
If you are ordering a remote port (you do not need your own equipment for this option), and connecting via another party, select “A third party who has a cage in an Equinix IBX".
Select the location or metro you will be connecting from. For connecting via “My own cage”, it will only display metros where you already have a physical presence. If you select remote port, or BMMR, you will be able to connect to locations you do not have a presence in.
The IBX is the specific datacenter in the metro you selected. There can be multiple IBX’s in one metro, and you will need to select the specific IBX you want to connect from.
The next step will be to select the specific account.
Select the specific Port Configuration you would like for your port.
You will be charged for each connection made from the port.
You will be charged a one time fee for unlimited connections from this port. We recommend this option if you plan on having a higher number of connections.
We recommend you select a higher speed for your convenience, as further changes to speed will require a manual change. Monthly Recurring Charge (MRC - you will be billed for this every month) and Non Recurring Charge (NRC - a one time fee) will both display on the tile.
LX supports multimode and single mode fibers.
SX supports multimode fibers.
At this step, you select the type of ports you want to order.
A single port is just a standard, standalone port.
A redundant port(s) is a pair of 2 redundant ports, or you can add on a port to an existing port to make redundant port.
LAG Ports are link aggregated ports which you can group to increase your bandwidth. For example, you can LAG 2 10Gbps ports to have a combined bandwidth of 20 Gbps. In your ECX inventory, regardless of how many LAG ports are in your LAG group, it will display as one virtual port. If you would like to start off with one LAG port, and wait until later to add on LAG ports to make a group, you will still need to order your first LAG-provisioned port through the LAG Port option or “Configure as a LAG Port” option now.
If you select “Add to existing LAG group”, you will select from your existing LAG ports to add to. At this step, it will only display provisioned ports that match the location, IBX, connections package, port speed, and port interface type your selected earlier. If the port you are looking for does not show up, you will need to check the components you selected previously.
Encapsulation Frame Type and TPID
For customer device interfaces using Dot1q single vlan tagging, 0x8100 is the standard Tag Protocol Identifier (TPID) frame type. Most enterprise customers connecting to the Cloud Exchange use the Dot1q and 0x8100 combination.
For customers that plan to use QinQ stacked vlan tagging, please select QnQ and the outer vlan tag TPID that you plan to use. This will vary by your network equipment vendor and implementation and be either 0x8100, 0x88a8, or 0x9100.
If you don’t know your encapsulation and TPID setting at the time of port order, please estimate what you will use for this order then work with the Equinix NOC at the time of the turn-up activation call to make any adjustments. Please note that if your device encapsulation and TPID configuration does not match what Equinix has set, virtual connections will not work.
On this page, you will select further details for your ports.
The first optional field will ask for connecting a Primary vs Secondary Equinix Router. A Primary and Secondary Equinix router have NO difference in performance and quality. This is an optional field, and if you do not choose to select a designation, the Equinix NOC team will default to a primary router for you. ECX fabric users often order a primary and secondary port on the ECX fabric in a metro for redundancy. In this case, the primary port will be used for primary virtual connections and the secondary port for secondary virtual connections when connecting to a Cloud Service Provider (like Microsoft Azure) which requires redundant virtual connections.
Next, you will need to select the patch panel, cage/suite, and cabinet for your ports. This is where your ECX fabric port will be connected to via a fiber cross connect. Only available selections will appear in the drop down and search fields. If the field you are looking for is missing, you may need to verify you have selected the right fields (IBX, Location, etc.) on previous pages.
You will also have to select the account this order will be billed to. Your ECX User name can be linked to multiple accounts. Please verify you are ordering on the right account with the Account # displayed on the drop down selection field. You can also upload an LOA (Letter of Authorization) at this step if you have one.
PO and Contact Info
On this page, you will enter information for your own internal account tracking purposes.
You can add a Purchase Order number if you have one, and if your company account requires a Purchase Order for the order to be completed, you will need to select a Purchase Order from the existing Purchase Orders linked to your specific account. To avoid delays, please ensure the correct PO is provided. You can also add an Internal Reference Code that will be printed on invoices for any tracking purposes you may have.
At the next step, you will need to verify the Contact information for the Order Contact and Notification Contact at this step. The Ordering Contact is the person Equinix will contact with any issues related to the order, and for the port turn up call if applicable. The notification contact will receive notifications related to outages, downtimes, maintenance, etc.
The contact information is optional.
At this step, please confirm all information related to the account, port order, and contact information is accurate, and then submit your order at the bottom right of the screen.
At this page, you have submitted your order! You will receive an email order confirmation, and you can continue to track your order in the Submitted Orders page once the order has been processed.
We recommend you create a Service Profile if you have not done so already. A service profile can be made public or private, and can be used to connect with other ECX Fabric customers. You can click “My Company”
